Gillian Cannon, a graduate of Seaford High School, is the 2019-2020 Delaware FFA Association State Vice President. She currently attends Delaware Technical Community College where she is studying production agriculture.
Gillian first learned about FFA from her older brother, AJ. Being five years younger than him, she tagged along to FFA events their home chapter hosted. She always enjoyed watching the members bond over a common interest. In eighth grade, Gillian attended her first FFA State Convention as a part of her brother’s support system since he was serving as the State Treasurer. During this convention he was also elected as State President.
“It was such a great experience to watch all the excitement and achievements students acquired,” Gillian said. “It was this level of energy and love I felt drove my passion.”
Gillian said her most challenging FFA experience was her first year competing at State Convention.
“I competed in the Creed Speaking LDE where I prepared for months and was super nervous to be competing in my very first event freshman year,” Gillian said. “After all the preparation, I did not make it past prelims and I was devastated so my ag advisor at the time pushed me into the Floriculture CDE where I practiced very hard and still did not succeed.
Since my freshman year I never gave up and it has helped shape me into the person I am today. Moral of the story, the most challenging FFA experience was failing repeatedly, but it was all worth it in the end.”
Gillian is most looking forward to interacting with Delaware FFA members throughout the year to create lifelong memories.
“I am excited to work closely with members who can create the change we need in this world,” Gillian said. “We can make a difference! I am also eager to help students come out of their shell and open them up to the endless possibilities that the FFA can provide for them. I cannot wait for this year!”
