I live off of my Google Calendar. It keeps me on track for my meetings, classes, appointments, deadlines, birthdays- pretty much every aspect of my life. While it’s helpful to have a visual reminder of everything I have going on- it can lead me to feeling pretty overwhelmed. Sometimes I look ahead and see a project due here, an event to plan there, and I can’t help but feel behind before I’ve even started.
This past July as I was going over my calendar for the month, I realized that our State Officer Summit and the State Fair would fall one right after the other. This meant my teammates and I would have to travel straight from Washington DC for Summit, to the State Fairgrounds to help run the fair for ten days. When we got to Summit in mid July, I couldn’t help but think about all the work we had to do when we got back; the social media posts we had to make, getting awards together for competitions, and preparing for our fair breakfast. I was in a room full of incredible state officers from across the country- and yet all I could think about was my growing to-do list back home. It wasn’t until later in the week that something clicked for me.
While at Summit, we were doing a workshop on communication skills, the facilitator said something so simple, “You are never too busy.” She continued by talking about how we are never too busy to say hi to someone, to talk to someone, to connect with someone. It put everything into perspective for me; yes my calendar and life right now looks hectic and busy, but the squares on the calendar are not what is important. The people I meet and interact with- the time I spend with them is what is important and I am never too busy to enjoy those moments I have with them.
I still struggle to maintain a good work-life balance; but what I’ve learned is that no matter how busy my calendar looks, I’m never too busy to share a laugh with my teammates, listen to someone’s story, or simply be present in the moment. Seasons of our life will be busy, but we have to remember that we are never too busy to enjoy the life we have with the time that we are given. You are never too busy.
Forever your friend,
