Congratulations on your decision to run for state office in Delaware. Serving as a FFA State Officer is a great honor. FFA officers are said to represent the best of the best in student leadership, which means upholding a very important responsibility…that of servant leadership. It comes with many responsibilities and opportunities to influence, impact, and serve FFA Members, advisors, teachers and supporters of the organization.
Over time, the experts in the field of leadership have figured out what it takes to be a true servant leader and how it works. There are two types of leaders…the one that wants to be the leader and the one that wants to be the servant. The leader is there for material reasons, a title, the need for power, while the servant leader has a natural desire to serve first. The servant leader cares about the FFA Members and what the decisions they make do to benefit or hurt you. Research has found that in order to be a servant leader, one needs the following qualities: listening skills, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, growth and building community. As you work to be the best servant leader that you can as an FFA Member, a chapter officer, or even perhaps a future State Officer or FFA Advisor, you should strive to have these qualities. The servant leader will do the best in the role of a Delaware FFA State Officer.
